海洋生物多樣性的時空變化資訊是規劃海洋生態保育的關鍵,但水下生態調查受到許多限制,長期、系統性的海洋生態監測一直相當困難。我所主持的海洋生態聲學與資訊實驗室,致力於研發數位化生態感測技術,並探討生物多樣性在各種環境、人為干擾下的變化趨勢。目前主要研發的技術,包含自動化分離水下的各種動物聲音、環境聲音與人為噪音,以長時間水下錄音觀測海洋生態系的動態變化。我們也主導「海洋生物多樣性聆聽計畫」,透過國際合作建立涵蓋潮間帶、河口、珊瑚礁、海草床、大陸棚、深海熱泉等生態系的水下聲景監測網路,將聲音轉換為棲地品質、生物多樣性、人為干擾的生態指標,以協助主管機關、權益關係人透過大量資訊了解生態變化並規劃保育管理措施。
