I am a marine field ecologist studying coral reef ecosystems in the West Pacific. My study mainly focuses on reproduction and recruitment processes of reef-building (scleractinian) corals. I believe that those studies will fulfill the knowledge gap and promote our understanding of population and community dynamics of corals. Today, corals suffer a global decline due to anthropogenic disturbances. Therefore, I also actively seek for positive factors and mechanisms in those processes that enhance recovery potential of coral populations. Although my target species are reef-building corals, I have started working on other coral reef organisms through collaborations with my colleagues and students, including a coral-killing sponge Terpios hoshinota, algae, diadematid sea urhcins, green sea turtles Chelonia mydas, and coral reef fish.
