Title:A Series of Fortunate Events: Isolating a Novel Bacteroidota and its Characterization
Host:Dr. Yin-Ru Chiang
Abstract
The Bacteroidota (synonym Bacteroidetes) are found in diverse environments. However, their presence and activities in the human gut as carbohydrate catabolizers are better known. Here we describe the serendipitous isolation of novel Bacteroidota from soil, its physiology (e.g., nitrous oxide utilization and sugar metabolism) and discuss implications in survival in soil environments. This Bacteroidota has a variable morphotype, multiple types of secretion systems suggesting a predatory lifestyle and genes for gliding motility.
