Major Research Achievements (2013-2017)
  • Phylogeogrpahy: Phylogeography involves discovering patterns of population structure and investigating the underlying evolutionary processes leading to those structures. My past research centered on phylogeography of birds in the Palearctic and addressed several relevant issues -- the comparison between gene history and species history (Hung et al. 2012; Hung et al. 2014), the confounding effect of natural selection in phylogeographic inferences (Hung and Zink 2014), and the extent of ecological niche divergence in the early stages of lineage divergence (Hung et al. 2013). These studies helped to provide a better picture of biogeographic history of avian fauna in the Palearctic. More recently, I study phylogeographic history of birds in East Asia (Hung et al. 2014) that complements my previous work in northern Palearctic species. Considering high phylogenetic closeness and genetic connectivity of species in the two geographic regions, I am investigating phylogeographic history of species across both regions.
  • Population genomics: Genomic data provide unprecedented power in estimating population history, lineage divergence and evolutionary mechanisms of ecological adaptation. I used genomic data to explore the population history of an extinct bird, the passenger pigeon, to examine the causes of its extinction (Hung et al. 2013; Hung et al. 2014). More recently, I devote myself more to evolutionary genomics of birds. I am interested in examining the genomic bases of ecological and behavioral adaptation in birds and other organisms.
