Major Research Achievements (2013-2017)
  • Spatial ecology and macroecology: Understanding species – environment relationships and identifying environmental determinants of biodiversity is the fundamental step to understand and ultimately predict ecological consequences of environmental changes. However, a lack of spatially and temporally high resolution and consistent environmental data layers obscures the real relationships and prevents effective biodiversity monitoring. To address this issue, my colleagues and I have developed novel approaches, with the help of remote sensing, to provide fine-grain information on global environmental characteristics, including land cover (Tuanmu & Jetz, 2014), spatial habitat heterogeneity (Tuanmu & Jetz, 2015), and climate (Parmentier et al., 2014; 2015). These remote sensing-based environmental characteristics have enhanced our understanding of and improved our ability to model broad-scaled species distributions (Tuanmu & Jetz, 2014; He et al., 2015) and biodiversity patterns (Tuanmu & Jetz, 2015; Crowther, 2015).
  • Conservation biology: Biodiversity loss is one of the most serious crises facing humanity. Effective conservation requires better understanding of the feedback interactions between human and natural systems (Hull et al., 2015). Based on long-term socio-economic surveys of households, field surveys on giant pandas and their food resources, and remote sensing-based habitat models (Tuanmu et al., 2010; 2011), my colleagues and I have found a reversion of a more-than-30-year decreasing trend of panda habitat in a flagship nature reserve in China. Our study indicated that using an incentive-based strategy to engage people into conservation efforts as a complement to command-and-control, community- and norm-based strategies may help achieve greater conservation effectiveness and provide a potential solution for the conflict between human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation (Wu et al., 2013; Tuanmu et al., 2016).
