Research Directions

  • I am an intertidal ecologist and barnacle taxonomist, using barnacles as model species to study factors affecting the biodiversity, biogeography and phylogeography patterns of intertidal organisms. The Indo-Pacific region contains the highest marine biodiversity in the world. To protect and sustainably develop our biodiversity resources, it is very important to understand the patterns and process that contribute to such high diversity in the Indo-Pacific region. My research use a multiple species approach (which covers wider geographical ranges of species distribution), to test the hypothesis whether diversity pattern of intertidal species in the Indo-Pacific is controlled by present day oceanographic currents or the past geological events (including the formation of glacial refugia from the marginal sea regions during the Pleistocene glaciations).
  • Our study is a pioneer research that uses molecular, morphological and taxonomical approach in examining the intertidal biodiversity in the whole Indo-Pacific region. Our findings showed that the diversity patterns of intertidal species in different parts of the Indo-Pacific are affected by the relative importance between the present day oceanographic currents and the geological historical events. In the temperate NW Pacific, the presences of marginal seas result in species have their population expanded after the Last Glacial Maximum. In addition, the low seawater temperature enhances wide scale larval dispersal. The population structure of intertidal species is panmictic over a wide range of geographical region. In the Central Indo-Pacific region, the separation of the Indian and Pacific Oceans during the glaciations and with the addition of the present day oceanographic current pattern can affect the genetic connectivity of intertidal barnacles. In the West Indian Ocean, there are a few marginal seas, the distribution of intertidal barnacles is more related to the oceanographic currents but less to geological history processes.
  • I also worked in the field of morphological and molecular taxonomy of barnacles. I have identified 94 species of thoracican barnacles in Taiwan. Recently, I am working on the diversity and host-specificity of coral-associated barnacles.
